Porcelain Veneers: Transform Your Smile with a Natural Look

Porcelain Veneers

Are you aware of the fact that some people partially cover their mouths with their lips when they smile? Normally, it is a chipped tooth, an outdated stain, or they just do not like the gap. This is why porcelain veneers were created. Many patients we encounter at Dental Peace are asking about these, and it’s more than understandable when you know how fast it is. The shells fit over your existing teeth, and in 2 visits your smile is brighter and even, and no long treatment plan is necessary.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Think of a thin shell, like a false nail but the size of a tooth. It is crafted from dental-grade ceramic and takes the shape of your natural colour prior to your dentist bonding it to the front of each tooth. Whilst an artificial tooth cap will be placed over the entire tooth, veneers will only require the front surface to be prepared; therefore, less of the enamel will come into contact. Ceramic is also formed in such a way that it refracts the light like true enamel, which means no one can tell by looking.

There are a few instances when they assist:

  • Those stains that whitening simply won’t take away!
  • A small chip or hairline crack very close to the edge
  • Slightly crooked or uneven teeth
  • A gap between the front teeth that can be seen from the side
  • Teeth that are somewhat under or abnormally sized

Why This Keeps Coming Up as an Option

Most people opt for porcelain veneers because they look like their natural teeth, but better-looking and with very little to maintain afterward. These are some of the things that patients say they enjoy:

  • They do not stain, and therefore the color lasts for many years.
  • Less tooth structure is sacrificed than in the case of a crown.
  • Your dentist will match the shade to your other teeth
  • Daily brushing and flossing are all it takes
  • The process works much quicker than braces or aligners.

If the main problem is crookedness and not color, your dentist may mention teeth straightening before applying the veneers and then getting everything straight when you have the veneers.

What Actually Happens During Treatment

It’s covered by two appointments, about a week apart. The first step involves a consultation, during which your dentist is able to look for any areas of concern under your teeth, such as dental fluorosis or an infection that requires treatment before the procedure is undertaken. Then a thin layer of enamel is removed to make space, and an impression is taken and sent to the lab, while the patient wears a temporary shell in the meantime. After the real ones are received, they are bonded on, examined, and buffed.

Getting a teeth cleaning appointment just before this also benefits you, as your dentist gets a better idea of your natural teeth color and gum condition prior to shaping.

Who's a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

They’re not something that has to be considered for a celebrity’s dentistry. If you have healthy teeth and gums but the smile itself doesn’t feel it, then you are most likely a good fit. However, if you have missing teeth, the dentist is going to discuss dental implants or full-mouth implants first because the bite has to be stable before cosmetic work can be considered. It is not a show of good faith to have a dentist examine your chewing pattern and gums prior to the placement – shells fit over a problem set of gums do not tend to stay in place.

Looking After Them Long Term

Care for them, and you can have new veneers in 10-15 years.

  • Brush and floss as usual, but focus on the area around the gums
  • Avoid chewing on ice, pens, or fingernails
  • If you grind your teeth, then a night guard comes in handy.
  • Get rid of the skip whiteners – they do not alter the color of the shell.
  • Keep up regular visits, the same as any quality dental treatment plan
  • Address jaw clicking or pain early on; not late!

Final Thoughts

Changing your smile doesn’t have to eat up months of your time. Porcelain veneers can be used in a couple of visits to cover chipped, stained, and gapped teeth in a realistic manner. If you’re considering the pros and cons, make an appointment and discuss it with your dentist at Dental Peace.
